Chicago Federation of Labor Statement on the Passage of the Fair Tax in the Illinois General Assembly

Fair Tax would put Illinois’ tax system on the side of working families

CHICAGO – Chicago Federation of Labor President Bob Reiter released the following statement in response to the passage of the Fair Tax Amendment in the Illinois General Assembly, placing the measure on the November 2020 ballot:

“The current income tax system in Illinois is regressive, inadequate, and unfair to everyone except the wealthiest. Illinois needs to join the majority of other states and the federal government by implementing a Fair Tax. The Fair Tax will reduce the tax burden on working people while asking the wealthiest to pay their fair share, in the process raising billions in revenue for schools, human services, and other vital state functions.

“I would like to thank the legislators in the Illinois General Assembly who voted to pass this amendment and ensured voters get a say on this critical issue. The Chicago Federation of Labor stands ready to do whatever it can to help pass this amendment next fall. It is time to put Illinois’ tax system on the side of working families, not the wealthiest.”
