Chicago Federation of Labor Statement on the Historic Election of Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch

CHICAGO – Chicago Federation of Labor President Bob Reiter released the following statement on election of Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch as Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives:

“On behalf of the Chicago Federation of Labor, we congratulate Speaker Chris Welch on his historic election as Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, the first Black Illinoisan to hold the position. Speaker Welch has a deep understanding of the challenges so many workers are facing right now and an established track record of standing up for workers’ rights. We are eager to partner with Speaker Welch in the days ahead to find ways to further strengthen the working class of Chicago, Cook County, and the State of Illinois.

“The CFL would also like to thank Speaker Michael J. Madigan for his steadfast commitment to the working people of this state during his time as Speaker of the House. Speaker Madigan’s legacy of supporting workers’ rights will continue to improve the lives of countless Illinoisans and strengthen the labor movement for generations to come. Thank you, Speaker Madigan, for your selfless dedication to Illinois workers and their families.”
