Chicago Federation of Labor Statement on Historic Instacart Worker Organizing Victory

CFL President Reiter: “This is a fight that is just beginning.”

CHICAGO – Chicago Federation of Labor President Bob Reiter released the following statement in response to Instacart workers in Skokie, Ill. winning the first union election in company history:

“Congratulations to the Instacart workers in Skokie, Ill., and to UFCW Local 1546, on today’s hard fought and historic victory. The Chicago Federation of Labor stands ready to do whatever we can to support you in your first contract negotiation.

“Workers in Chicago have recently won significant battles in the legislature, on the picket line, and at the organizing table. From the landmark Fair Workweek Ordinance to a $15 minimum wage law at the city and state to strikes in our schools, hotels, and hospitals, the Chicago labor movement is fighting every day to give all workers a voice on the job. Today’s historic election helps extend that voice to gig workers, who desperately need the freedom to join together in a union. This is a fight that is just beginning.

“To any worker who does not have a voice on the job, who does not have dignity at work, know that you can be the catalyst for change. Visit aflcio.org/formaunion to learn more to learn more about unionizing your workplace.

“And to the newest union members of UFCW Local 1546: welcome.”
