Access United Among Groups Awarded Illinois Tollway Grant

In May, the Illinois Tollway announced that it would award a major grant to a coalition of organizations, including the Chicago Federation of Labor Workforce & Community Initiative and Access United. The grant funds efforts to help prepare minorities, women, economically disadvantaged individuals, ex-offenders and veterans for apprenticeship programs in the heavy highway and transportation-related construction industry.

Access United will work in coalition with the CFL, United Way of Metro Chicago, the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership and other organizations to promote apprenticeship opportunities to diverse candidates throughout the Tollway’s 12-county service area. This program will give unions throughout the Northern Illinois region the opportunity to work with community groups in their areas to recruit their future workforce. Through the program, Access United will onboard 15 new community partners, expand its footprint, reach new people and seek to support 170 new apprentices in the union construction trades.
