UAW Locals 551 and 588 Win Leo Perlis Award

United Auto Workers Locals 551 and 588 were honored recently with the Leo Perlis Labor Partnership Award at United Way’s annual celebration fundraiser for their contributions to their local communities. The UAW Locals, representing Ford employees at the Stamping and Assembly plants on Chicago’s South Side, were recognized for their efforts through their employees’ contributions to the United Way 2016-2017 fundraising campaign, and for their volunteerism through the UAW/Ford Community Service Team. Local 551 President Chris Pena and Local 588 President Bill Jackson were present at the ceremony to accept the award.

UAW members led United Way campaigns at the Stamping and Assembly facilities that focused on United Way’s impact on Chicago’s South Side where UAW members live and work. The worker-led campaign contributed over $144,000 for United Way’s community service programs. Through the UAW/ Ford Community Service Team, UAW members work to build ramps for disabled residents. In partnership with United Way, the team built ramps at the homes of individuals receiving services through Blue Cap, a disability services program in Blue Island.

Each year the Leo Perlis Award recognizes the efforts of labor unions to give back to those in need. The CFL congratulates the efforts of UAW members on winning this prestigious award.
