Local Construction Projects Recognized for Top-Quality Union Work

The Construction Industry Service Corporation, CISCO, announced its Project of the Year award winners at the end of 2017 as part of its annual Pride in Construction Award Program. The program recognizes the top-quality union construction projects in six different categories.

“We are proud to recognize these projects, the project teams and organizations for this prestigious award,” said CISCO Executive Director Dan Allen.

The top project in the New Construction/Chicago (above $20 million) category went to the new McCormick Place Hotel and Event Center in Chicago. The 40-story Marriott Marquis serves as a flagship hotel, and the 300,000-square-foot Wintrust Arena is the new home to DePaul University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and the City’s WNBA team, the Chicago Sky. The arena boasts more than 10,000 seats.

The top choice in the category for New Construction – Chicago or Suburbs (below $20 million) was the new Peoples Gas Training Center. The 50,000-square-foot facility is located in the Chicago Little Village neighborhood. One of the extraordinary aspects of the project was the construction of a mock “Gas City”—a fully functioning natural gas delivery system to 20 “homes” and “businesses.” There, employees and their contractors will practice installing and servicing natural gas pipes and meters, conducting safety inspections, locating pipelines and responding to mock emergencies.

Special mention went to Plumbers Local 130 Joint Apprenticeship Committee Training Center. The new 48,000-square-foot state-of-the art building is equipped for the future of plumbing. The three story building features: rainwater harvesting, which takes rainwater off the roof, stores it in both a 10,000 gallon underground tank and a 3,500 above-ground tank and puts it back into the plumbing system to flush urinals; grey water harvesting used for the irrigation system of the trees and plants in the new plaza; six different wet-labs that feature 94 faucets, residential and commercial plumbing fixtures and a water heater lab; a green roof; and solar panels to create hot water for the entire building.
