Statement regarding Friends of the Parks’ opposition to building the Lucas Museum on the site of McCormick Place East

It is a shame that Friends of the Parks is trying to block the development of the Lucas Museum on the site of McCormick Place East. Investing in this museum now will bring huge returns for the city and the region for years to come. We estimate that approximately 8,000 construction jobs will be created to tear down McCormick Place East and build the Lucas Museum. Once construction is complete, the jobs will pivot to a broad range of professions throughout the workforce, including museum, hotel, restaurant, airport, and mass transit workers, to name a few. George Lucas has handed Chicago this highly sought after project; it would be a shame to let this museum slip through our fingers because of a handful of people. Friends of the Parks is blocking access to the culture that will continue to make our city unique in the location that makes the most sense. What would our lakeshore be without the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and Adler Planetarium? The Lucas Museum understands this significance and will seamlessly fit right in. But more importantly, Friends of the Parks is blocking the pipeline to connect thousands of hard working Chicagoans to good-paying jobs.
