When members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1700 rallied in front of the Greyhound bus terminal in Chicago on June 28, they wore t-shirts made by union garment workers. On the job, however, they cannot wear union-made uniforms because their employer has been forcing them to wear non-union uniforms made in sweatshop conditions.
Members of ATU Local 1700, headquartered in New York, were joined by members of Local 308 and other local unions and community-based groups from the Chicago area to protest Greyhound’s uniform policy.
Bruce Hamilton, President of the New York City-based Local 1700, called on Greyhound to respect its workers’ rights. He was joined by ATU Local 308 President Rick Harris, AFSCME Council 31 Director and Chicago Federation of Labor Executive Board Member Henry Bayer, and Joe Costigan, Secretary-Treasurer of UNITE HERE’s Chicago-Midwest Joint Board. Greyhound wants its drivers to wear uniforms manufactured by Cintas, a notoriously anti-union company with a long record of disrespecting workers. Greyhound had imposed a trial period for the uniforms that was scheduled to terminate at the end of last year. Instead, they have continued “testing” the non-union, sweatshop-produced uniforms, even expanding the program further throughout the country. |
