City budget slashes 929 jobs, 1,346 vacancies PDF Print E-mail

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley released his budget for 2009 that includes 929 layoffs and eliminating 1,346 vacancies to help close a $469 budget deficit. 

He also proposed a 3-day temporary shutdown of city government for all non-essential services the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.  The shutdown would occur in 2008 and 2009.   His proposed budget also includes a number of cost saving and revenue generating measures including slowed police hiring, increased taxes for amusement and parking, consolidating city departments and privatizing 35,000 parking meters.
