As part of our upcoming Labor Day activities, the Chicago Federation of Labor will once again organize the Labor in the Pulpits program. This program has been proven enormously successful since being piloted here in Chicago in 1995. Last year members, representatives, shop stewards and elected labor leaders spoke at dozens of different religious services across the Chicagoland area, discussing how labor and religion work hand-in-hand to strengthen our families and communities.
This year we wanted to try something a little different. We know that our members have great ties to the religious community on personal levels. We are asking you to personally speak to your religious leader (minister, pastor, priest, rabbi, etc.), and ask them if they would be willing to allow you to speak from the pulpit to your congregation or incorporate you as a speaker this Labor Day weekend (August 29 – August 31). We believe that by speaking to your own neighbors and friends Labor's message will have an even greater impact. Participating in this program is an excellent way to spread the word about the work of the Labor movement in general and their efforts to improve conditions for working people in the area. Your message could also include the shared history of the Faith and Labor communities. We have enclosed a flier for you to use when talking to your leaders. This can be used to give them an overview of what would be expected. Speakers will receive training and other materials to help them prepare for the event. If your religious leaders have any questions please encourage them to contact us and we will be more than happy to explain the program and give them more details.
If you or any of your fellow union members would be interested in this program we would appreciate your help. If you have any questions please contact us. Please fill out the flier (click here) and have your religious leader fill out their portion and we will contact you both.
