CTA warns of steep cuts, layoffs PDF Print E-mail

If the CTA does not receive adequate funding from state government, the cuts and layoffs it will be forced to make will far exceed the "doomsday" scenario proposed in September.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the CTA will lay off 620 workers on November 4 if  the governor and state legislators fail to come up with funding and the 2008 budget would include additional layoffs.

In September, Governor Blagojevich came up with a short-term fix to temporarily avoid mass layoffs, fare hikes and service cuts.  But the money was an advance on next year's budget, and if lawmakers do not come up with a long-term funding solution, transit officials will be forced to make even more drastic budget cuts this time around.
