Several aldermen criticized a security contract for O'Hare and Midway Airports handed out by the city because the firm fails to pay its employees a living wage.  The firm, Universal Security Corp., is a non-union firm and replaces unionized guards who protected the airports for the last eight years.

The city has a living wage ordinance that requires its vendors to pay employees a minimum of $10.50 per hour. Universal's guards, however, earn just $7.50 an hour.

Several of Chicago's aldermen are upset about the contract and want action to correct the problem.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times:

Furious about the decision to award the job of guarding the city's ariports to the lowest bidder, Chicago aldermen Tuesday grilled city procurement and aviation officials at a special hearing.

Several aldermen demanded the contract with Universal Security be terminated, saying the company fails to pay its employees the minimum hourly wage required of the city's vendors.
