The Employee Free Choice Act, a piece of legislation that would bolster the rights of workers to form unions if they choose, advanced in the U.S. House of Representatives but was met with a serious threat issued by Vice President Dick Cheney.

The bill passed out of the House Education and Labor Committee, but Cheney said President Bush would veto the bill if it is sent to him.

Even though a majority of workers say they would join a union if they could, union busting through both legal and illegal practices is increasingly common at the workplace.  The Employee Free Choice Act would make it easier for workers to exercise their right to choose whether to join a union.
