The Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL) is the central labor body for over 300 Chicago area unions affiliated with the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor – Congress of Industrial Organizations). The membership of these unions exceeds 500,000.
The CFL was formed in the late 1800s to strengthen the efforts of individual union locals by creating a unified voice for the city’s labor movement.
The main objective of the CFL, both when it formed over 100 years ago and continuing today, is to stand up for working men and women by supporting organizing efforts to ensure that workers’ rights upheld both on the job and in the courts.
The CFL also helps local unions resolve contract disputes in ways that create win-win solutions for both the employees and the employer.
Our organization also creates opportunities for unions to work together in organizing efforts through the establishment of the Cook County Organizing Committee.
We assist such beneficial community programs as the United Way, and, in the legislative arena, we mobilize lobbying efforts and “Get Out the Vote” drives and form coalitions with such allied organizations as the Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues.
The CFL also plays the role of labor’s ambassador to the larger Chicago community by working closely with the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau and city and business leaders on other committees to keep Chicago’s economy strong and growing.
