City budget slashes 929 jobs, 1,346 vacancies |

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley released his budget for 2009 that includes 929 layoffs and eliminating 1,346 vacancies to help close a $469 budget deficit. He also proposed a 3-day temporary shutdown of city government for all non-essential services the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The shutdown would occur in 2008 and 2009. His proposed budget also includes a number of cost saving and revenue generating measures including slowed police hiring, increased taxes for amusement and parking, consolidating city departments and privatizing 35,000 parking meters. Mayor Richard Daley will release his budget proposal this morning at City Hall. Top budget officials have said that in order to fill the $460 million budget shortfall, as many as 1,000 men and women will be laid off. On Tuesday, he announced a plan for a citywide government shutdown on the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas and New Year's Eve. The layoffs are expected to impact union members from a variety of local unions, with the most severe cuts coming to Laborers and AFSCME members.

Employer-sponsored Health Insurance Coverage Continues Decline |

The health insurance most Americans receive, employer-sponsored insurance (ESI), has dwindled each year since 2000, according to a report released today by the Economic Policy Institute. The Erosion of Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance, by EPI economist Elise Gould, focuses on the decline of ESI coverage - the coverage most Americans receive, as well as the type of coverage that has seen the steepest decline.

1,000 Illinois Administrators Win a Union Voice With AFSCME |

by James Parks, AFL-CIO Oct 7, 2008 A year after voting for the union, some 1,000 Illinois state government administrators have become members of AFSCME Council 31. The majority of the new union members work in the departments of Children & Family Services and Human Services, according to Council 31 spokesman Anders Lindall. Others are in the departments of Public Health and Aging, as well as some smaller departments. Says Council 31 Executive Director Henry Bayer: AFSCME is pleased to welcome these dedicated public servants into our union family. We are proud to stand and fight for them and the essential public services they provide.

The deadline to register to vote in the November election is Tuesday, October 7. The Chicago Election Board will be open at 69 W. Washington Street and at City Hall on the Deadline, Tue., Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to Midnight. You can also register at a number of sites across the Chicago area.
