Chicago Teachers Union Files Suit Against Chicago Public Schools

On Monday, August 2nd, the Chicago Teachers Union filed suit in federal court in Chicago to stop the arbitrary dismissals of hundreds of teachers and support staff by Chicago Public Schools. The suit alleges that the Board is dismissing some of the city’s most qualified teachers in a manner that violates the rights of CTU members to procedural due process under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution as well as their rights under the labor contract.

Chicago is "second city" when it comes to percentage of workforce that's unionized

Many people still think of Chicago as a big “union town” -- and they’re right, at least compared to most other major U.S. cities.

Out of the 10 most populated American cities, the Chicago region ranks second -- tied with metro Philadelphia –- for having the largest percentage of union members in the workforce, an analysis by ChicagoUnionNews.com found.

About 17.5 percent of employees in the Chicago area belong to a union, according to 2009 data from the Union Membership and Coverage Database, which uses monthly household surveys to calculate the estimates.

Hotel workers protest Hyatt cuts

Hotel workers protest Chicago-based Hyatt hotel chain 

Fed up with the Hyatt hotel chain taking advantage of the recession to set hotel workers back, dozens of working men and women in Chicago were arrested in a peaceful act of civil disobedience outside the Hyatt Regency.

Hundreds of supporters crowded the sidewalks and blocked Wacker Drive in front of the hotel to express their  frustration with staffing cuts, reduced hours, and excessive injury rates at the Chicago-based chain. Hotel workers in Chicago, represented by UNITE HERE Local 1, have been working without a contract since August 2009.
