The Chicago Teachers Union has filed a lawsuit objecting the CPS plan to increase class size to as high as 35 students and also to lay off almost 3,000 teachers.  The suit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, claims that increasing class sizes by 20% jeopardizes classroom safety and violates municipal codes.

“This union will not stand by and let them balance their budget on the backs of our students," said Marilyn Stewart, President of the CTU.

The union also argues that increasing class size is detrimental to the education of children.

Carpenters challenge McPier overhaul

The Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters are challenging the constitutionality of the new MPEA reforms enacted by the Illinois General Assembly with a lawsuit filed in U.S. district court this week.

The Carpenters say the new reforms take away their right to collective bargaining and threaten the livelihood of their members who set up and dismantle large trade shows at McCormick Place.

"The current legislation will have a devastating effect upon the carpenters who have earned their living working at McCormick Place and Navy Pier for many years," said the Carpenters.

"This lawsuit is not about the union or some political agenda.  It is about the men and women working in this industry and their federally protected rights to negotiate the terms and conditions of their employment without governmental interference."
